The Party of Labour (PdA) and its youth wing, the Jugendfront, sent an open letter to Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker, Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger, urging the country to uphold its vote in the General Assembly.
The letter comes on the eve of a vote scheduled for today, as the multilateral body considers—for the thirty-fourth time—a document calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial embargo.
The letter, signed by PdA president Otto Bruckner and Jugendfront president Moritz Pamminger, cites a report presented by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on September 7. The report documents damages exceeding $8 billion in a single year, with cumulative losses reaching $178.7 billion.
Furthermore, it notes that the stated objective of US policy—as outlined in a 1960 State Department memorandum—is to cause “hunger, desperation, and the overthrow of the Cuban government.” It characterizes the blockade, including restrictions on oil, as “an act of genocide” and a violation of international humanitarian law.
For its part, the Left-Wing Trade Union Bloc (GLB) of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (OGB) sent a communication to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—signed by Oliver Jonischkeit, Federal Secretary of the GLB—stating that the sanctions are suffocating the population and are directly aimed at hindering the island’s independent development, as well as its peaceful economic relations with other states for mutual benefit.
Furthermore, the Left-Wing Trade Union Bloc announced that it will join the public protest against the blockade, which is taking place today in front of the United Nations headquarters in Vienna, coinciding with the vote in the General Assembly.
