This follows news that Argentine President Javier Milei will participate in the 30th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, to be held in Madrid on November 4 and 5.
Milei is set to return to the Spanish capital, following a contentious previous visit during which he used highly undiplomatic language to insult Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez—an act that took place with the tacit approval of the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso.
The Argentine leader will arrive at a summit hosted by King Felipe VI of Spain—who previously declined to meet with him—and Prime Minister Sanchez, whom Milei has labeled an “unacceptable dictator,” “corrupt,” and a “thief.”
In a clear far-right strategy ahead of Spain’s general elections on November 29, the Argentine president—speaking at a public forum—called for “kicking the socialists out,” while openly supporting Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right party Vox, as well as Diaz Ayuso.
Other dignitaries with ties to Argentina will also attend the Ibero-American Summit—though from more moderate positions—including Paraguay’s Santiago Peña, Peru’s Keiko Fujimori, and Ecuador’s Daniel Noboa.
For various reasons, several leftist leaders will not be in attendance, including the recently re-elected President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. …the Uruguayan Yamandu Orsi, while Mexico’s head of state, Claudia Sheinbaum, is still weighing whether or not to attend the gathering.
It will pose a challenge for the socialist Pedro Sanchez, and an opportunity for the conservatives of the Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party to consolidate their lead in the polls, which currently favor them to win the elections on November 29.
