China advances in economic openness amid global contraction

Shanghai, China, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) China has improved its standing in the World Openness Index, despite a global contraction recorded in 2025, the Hongqiao International Economic Forum, meeting here, reported.

The event is taking place in the context of the 9th China International Import Expo (CIIE), under the theme of promoting a more resilient and inclusive joint openness to achieve shared prosperity.

The world openness index stood at 0.7453 points in 2025, representing a one percent year-on-year decline, the largest drop since 2016.

The report attributed this setback to growing trade restrictions and unilateral, protectionist measures implemented by some of the world’s major economies.

The openness policy index, which reflects economies’ willingness to boost them, fell 1.09 percent to 0.7448 points, while the result indicator dropped 0.90 percent to 0.7458 points.

This year’s study included a global public opinion survey on prospects for openness, whose results showed cautiously optimistic expectations among those surveyed.
