Use of facemasks in Cuba came to stay, epidemiologist say
Havana, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) The national director of Epidemiology at the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), Dr. Francisco Duran, said on Friday that the use of facemasks came to stay, considering the characteristics of Covid-19 and the favorable results reported by the local health system.
Speaking about the pandemic during his regular press briefing at the International Press Center, Dr. Duran noted that using the facemask will be maintained during the first, second and even third phase of the de-escalation of health measures against Covid-19 in Cuba.
Facemasks are necessary because you never know who is infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and, above all, due to the high number of asymptomatic patients reported in the country (1,283 patients), Dr. Duran commented.
Facemasks are mandatory for the health personnel and they should protect the nose, because the coronavirus can be inhaled, the physician noted.
Dr. Duran, who is the best-known face in the fight against the pandemic, said recently that all Cubans must use facemasks to leave their homes as a way to prevent contagion with Covid-19.
'The use of that protective means is necessary, it is indispensable,' said the expert, who explained that it prevents the small drops of saliva from getting out, thus preventing the infection of people and surfaces.
He noted that no critical cases have been reported in Cuba over the last seven days, adding that of 48 of 49 active cases are stable and one patient is in critical condition.
Some 2,690 tests for Covid-19 were performed, resulting in eight positive cases. Cuba accumulates 178,062 tests and 2,361 Covid-19 cases since March, when the pandemic outbreak started, Dr. Duran stated.
All eight cases (seven men and one woman) are Cuban citizens, seven of them were contacts of other confirmed cases, and the cause of the disease was undetermined in one case, the expert noted.
No deaths were reported on Thursday, so the total number remains at 85, and three people were discharged from hospital.
