UNHCR urges world's solidarity with Afghanistan's displaced persons
Geneva, Switzerland, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) urged on Monday world's solidarity with displaced persons in Afghanistan and host communities in Iran and Pakistan.
As the crisis in Afghanistan enters its 5th decade, some 2.7 million refugees still live outside the country, while another 2.6 million are displaced within the nation, the agency recalled, addressing one of the oldest displacement situations in the world.
UNHCR also called for renewed partnerships and targeted investments by the international community, saying that prospects for solutions remain elusive.
The agency recalled that Afghans make up the largest group of refugees and migrants arriving in Europe, through the routes of the Mediterranean Sea.
Since 2012, Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan have been working to build a more conducive atmosphere for voluntary repatriation and sustainable reintegration, while easing pressure on host communities.
