Cuba to award health scholarships to Jamaican students
Kingston, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will award today nine health scholarships for Jamaican students, in a virtual ceremony due to the Covid-19 pandemic and as a sign of its commitment to the professional development of the Caribbean peoples.
According to data provided to Prensa Latina by the Cuban mission in Jamaica, the winners will have the opportunity to study medicine, nursing and post-graduate specialization at Cuba´s higher education institutions.
The selection committee chose those nine students after reviewing fifty applications, interviewing a score of shortlisted candidates, and debating weighed competence, need and social commitment.
Representatives of the Ministries of Finance and Public Services; Health and Wellbeing; Education, Youth and Information; and Foreign Affairs of Jamaica –along with members of Graduates and Friendship Association, as well as the Cuban embassy in Jamaica and the heads of health and education brigades carried out the scholarship granting process.
The Scholarship Program between both Caribbean countries dates back to the 1970s, and more than 600 Jamaicans have studied in Cuban centers to date.
