Rome, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) Fresh water available per person has depleted by over 20 percent annually in the last two decades, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) noted in Rome. In the latest edition of the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2020 report, FAO noted that the problem is particularly serious in North Africa and West Asia, where water per capita fell by more than 30 percent.
In those regions, the annual average volume per person barely reaches 1,000 cubic meters, a level below that amount is described as severe water shortage, indicated the SOFA report on analyzing the shortage and deficit of water in the world.
According to the study, around 1.2 billion people live in areas where this predicament represents a threat to agriculture, where 128 million hectares of rainfed farmland and 656 million pastures are affected by frequent droughts.
Meanwhile, another 171 million hectares of irrigated farmland are subject to high or very high water stress.
'Water shortages and deficits in agriculture must be addressed immediately and boldly if we are to take seriously our commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,' noted FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu in the foreword to the report.
Noting that food security and nutrition are at stake on a global scale, Qu Dongyu underscored that increasing competition for water, including among sectors, users and sometimes among countries, also creates serious challenges.
