Brasilia, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) Indigenous leaders Raoni Metuktire and Almir Surui asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, for environmental violations that involve crimes against humanity, it was confirmed today.
According to the UOL news website, the complaint of about 50 pages by the two indigenous leaders was assisted by French lawyer William Bourdon, known for defending international human rights causes and more recently the cases of Edward Snowden, Julian Assange and African activists.
This constitutes the fifth indictment against Bolsonaro at the ICC, based in the Netherlands, and the next step would be a preliminary analysis by the Prosecutor's Office of that court to decide whether to authorize the investigation of the file.
According to Bourdon, the case may help the recognition of ecocide among the international transgressions judged by the ICC, which has jurisdiction to analyze war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Ecocide is defined as serious and lasting damage to the environment, causing significant harm to human life and natural resources.
Questioned about the report, Bourdon responded that he does not have access to other representations to the ICC against the far-right leader to explain the difference between them.
He warned that the crimes for which Bolsonaro is accused are susceptible to be qualified as crimes against humanity. However, he clarified, these were perpetrated 'in a broader context of environmental crime.'
Among other complaints against Bolsonaro at the ICC, three concern the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and the fourth addresses the rights of indigenous populations.
