Germany Extends Austria Border Controls over Migrants

After pointing out the insufficient protection at the external borders of the European Union (EU), the German agency considered that many migrants still cross the territorial borders from one country to another in an unsafe manner.
The new border control measure between Germany and Austria, which was implemented in 2015, will be in force until May 11 next year, said German Interior spokeswoman Eleonore Petermann.
Both Austria and Germany are part of the 26-country conglomerate within the so-called Schengen area, where the free movement of persons is allowed.
However, a clause in that agreement allows for internal controls for security reasons.
Not few European states refuse thousands of migrants entry to their territories, fleeing from North African and Middle Eastern states to other destinations due to war and internal economic crises.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), around 1,800 people have died in an attempt to reach Europe's coasts through the Mediterranean so far this year.
