South Africa records highest daily growth in Covid-19 cases
Pretoria, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) South Africa recorded its highest number of infections by the new coronavirus for 24 hours, at dawn this Friday with 6,579 new confirmed cases since the last daily news release from the country's health authorities.
This, according to the text signed by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, brings the total number of infections to 118,375.
Meanwhile, the number of deaths caused by Covid-19 reached 2,292, which represents a 1.9 percent mortality rate, three times lower than the world average, according to South African health authorities.
Of the deaths, the report details, 53 happened in the southern Western Cape province, the most severely hit by the disease in the country, 17 in the also southern Eastern Cape, 15 in eastern KwaZulu Natal and two in central Gauteng, where the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg are located.
In addition, the statement adds, the number of people who successfully passed Covid-19 is 59,974, which translates into a recovery rate of 50.7 percent.
Meanwhile, the national campaign for early detection of carriers of the new coronavirus continues, with 43,118 medical tests conducted in the last 24 hours, contributing to a cumulative total of 1,460,000 tests.
