Santiago de Chile, June 26 (Prensa Latina) Although confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic prevents public tributes and even the pilgrimage to his grave, thousands of Chileans remember Salvador Allende today on the 112th anniversary of his birth.
On social networks, as if he were present, many congratulate him, while others go further and bring to the present the ideas and example of the 'fellow President', as they called him when he occupied the La Moneda palace, the classes humblest of Chile who saw in him their first and genuine representative.
The newspaper El Siglo, in an article by its director, Hugo Guzmán, assures that Salvador Allende is remembered today when some 'do not hesitate to define him as the most important and influential social and political leader in the history of Chile in the last two centuries' .
He argues that 'his imprint radiated nationally and internationally and his thinking is a recurring source in academic, legislative, political, union, student and historian spaces'.
His practice as a doctor, a socialist activist, a fundamental figure of the Chilean left, minister, parliamentarian and President of the Republic, was sealed in coherence and rectitude in the last gesture of unrestricted defense of the popular and constitutional mandate to defend the presidency, installed and fighting in the presidential palace of La Moneda, he points out.
Meanwhile, for Paula Vidal Molina, academic from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Chile, her ideology remains in force for more than eight months from October 18, 2019, when millions of Chileans took to the streets tired of neoliberalism and calling for a profound transformation of society.
He adds that today the consequences of the health, economic, social and political crisis that thousands of precarious, unemployed and impoverished workers are adding, together with the increasingly indebted and forced families to expose their lives to obtain daily sustenance.
Remember that at this juncture, the triumph of Popular Unity with Allende at the helm, expresses the path chosen by the Chilean people 50 years ago to advance in justice and social equality.
'Revisiting some of the ideas on equality that Salvador Allende conceived can shed light on their validity to promote transformations in Chile (...) and'it becomes more necessary than ever after observing the mantle of social barbarism that it presents and increases neoliberal society', concludes the academic one.
