Haiti recorded almost 40 earthquakes in June
Port-au-Prince, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) Haiti recorded 39 earthquakes in June, according to the latest seismological newsletter from the Office of Mines and Energy issued on Friday.
The text reported tremors in eight of the ten departments with intensity between 1.3 and 3.6 on the Richter open scale, classified as minor by geologists, and with a depth that varied from two to 50 kilometers.
The figures represent a decrease of 20.4 percent compared to May, when 39 earthquakes were recorded from 1.3 to 4.9 on the Richter open scale, and the majority, 34.7 percent, originated in the Southeast department.
Haiti is located in the midst of a vast system of geological faults that result from the movement of the Caribbean's and North America's plates; hence, the nation is prone to this type of phenomena.
According to the Office of Mines, at least 262 minor earthquakes were quantified during the first six months of this year.
In 2010, an earthquake of seven on the Richter scale claimed over 250,000 lives and destroyed the main buildings in the capital, including the National Palace that has not been rebuilt yet.
