Russia denounces Israel´s attempt to spread over the West Bank
9 de julio de 2020, 17:43Moscow, Jul 9 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced Thursday that Israel's attempt to extend its sovereignty over the West Bank will cause a new spiral of violence in the Middle East.
Maria Zajárova, spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that such a claim 'will not only bury the idea of a two-state solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict, but will also cause a new and dangerous spiral of violence in the region.'
According to the Russian agency Sputnik, the diplomat said to the press that Russia remains its unchanged stance of supporting the two-state solution to the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
In addition, she urged both parties to resume direct talks under the protection of the UN and with the support of the Quartet (Russia, the United States, the European Union and the UN).
Zajarova stressed that this talk would focus on the definition of status and a solution based on UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
In late January, the US President Donald Trump submitted the so-called 'Deal of the Century' for an alleged solution to the conflict, which makes it easier for Israel to annex Palestinian territories in the West Bank and extend its sovereignty to the Jordan Valley.
The US plan, supported by Tel Aviv, was rejected by several Arab countries, which consider it deprives Palestinians of the right to own territories recognized as theirs in United Nations resolutions.
