Portugal on fire alert
Lisbon, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Portugal woke up today in a state of alert after detecting several fires in the central region, the largest of which occurred in Oleiros and destroyed around 6,000 hectares of forest, according to initial estimates.
In such a situation, the Ministries of Internal Administration and Climate Action decided to activate the surveillance mechanisms and extend the alarm until tomorrow night, in correspondence with the existing meteorological conditions, which favor the spread of the fires.
According to the Civil Protection commander Luis Belo, the Oleiros fire started on Saturday and has already been controlled, but more than 800 troops remain in the area to guarantee its total eradication with the support of 274 vehicles and two light aircraft.
In statements to the press, Belo pointed out that this is hard work due to the length and complexity of the terrain.
Three nearby towns were evacuated and a firefighter died due to an accident suffered by the vehicle in which he was traveling.
