Palestinians suffer second and more severe wave of Covid-19
Ramallah, Jul 30 (Prensa Latina) With about 14,000 cases diagnosed since the beginning of the outbreak, the Palestinian territories are today suffering a second and more severe wave of the Covid-19, which increased the number of deaths to 84.
The Health Ministry reported 380 infections by the new coronavirus in just 24 hours (between one review and another), despite the measures taken to contain its spread, which is currently accelerating.
From March to date, most of the carriers and patients have been concentrated in Jerusalem and the West Bank, the latter being the epicenter of the pandemic since its appearance in the city of Bethlehem, where, according to Christian tradition, Jesus of Nazareth was born.
Of the new cases detected, 117 reside in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem and 186 in Hebron, the ministry said in a report published by the local press.
The experts explained that 8,465 people are suffering from the disease within the territories under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority (PA), and that more than 6,000 have managed to overcome the lethal pneumonia.
Although the number of infections is lower, the Gaza Strip, which is blockaded and bombed by the Tel Aviv government, is also a cause for concern.
The Gaza Strip is home to almost two million people, and its health infrastructure, which has been hit by decades of conflict, could not face an explosion of infections, said activists to Prensa Latina.
Israeli specialists are diagnosing up to 2,000 infections every day during a more aggressive phase of the Covid-19.
At the same time, they are demanding the release of prisoners, mainly children, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses, who are at risk inside Tel Aviv prisons due to the resurgence of the epidemic and the lack of protective measures for them in the face of the health crisis.
