South Africa: Over 500,000 Covid-19 cases, but low mortality
Pretoria, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) South Africa accumulates a total of 500,290 cases of Covid-19, of which 152,676 are currently active, however, it maintains low death rates.
According to an official statement, the death toll increased by 148 in the last hours, for a current total of 8,153, although, as President Cyril Ramaphosa points out, the actual number of deaths from the coronavirus is likely to exceed that figure.
According to the statement, of the deaths since the previous report, 36 were recorded in the southern province of Eastern Cape, 40 in central Gauteng, 41 in KwaZulu-Natal, 24 in Western Cape, and seven in Northern Cape.
However, as Ramaphosa points out, the national case-fatality rate, which is the number of deaths as a proportion of confirmed cases, remains at 1.6 percent, significantly lower than the world average.
Although South Africa has the fifth highest number of total Covid-19 cases worldwide, we have only 36 in terms of the proportion of deaths, the president added.
On the other hand, the number of recoveries is currently 342,461, which translates into a recovery rate of 68 percent.
