Israel amidst severe Covid-19 wave, protests over official reaction
6 de agosto de 2020, 14:27Tel Aviv, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) With about 78,000 Covid-19 cases, Israel today faces a second and more severe wave of the pandemic amid protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is accused of incompetence in the face of the health crisis.
The day before, specialists diagnosed 1,689 infections with the novel coronavirus, a figure slightly lower than that of previous days, when daily surveys showed numbers close to 2,000.
Almost daily during the last few weeks, the demonstrations in this city and Jerusalem, criticize the official reaction to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the associated economic debacle.
The Israelis who participate in the mobilizations against Bibi -as his relatives call him- accuse him of being corrupt and reproach his handling of the emergency, whose resurgence keeps the authorities and health personnel on edge.
In January, Netanyahu will have to appear in court for bribery, fraud and abuse of trust.
The resurgence of infections in Israel was prompted by the relaxation of measures to contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2 at a time when the decline in the number of infections created the illusion that the disease was under control.
'There was a general euphoria in society, a sense that we had weathered the first wave well and were left behind, something that of course was not true,' Danniel Leibovitch, director of an Israeli educational institution, told The New York Times.
