More than one million nine thousand Ecuadorians unemployed
Quito, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) With an economically active population of seven million 605 thousand 189 people, Ecuador registers a total of one million nine thousand 583 unemployed until the May-June period of this year, according to data released today.
The figure corresponds to the most recent National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment for May and June, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), with data from the first half of 2020.
According to the estimates revealed, the number represents 13.3 percent of the total number of people authorized to work in this South American country.
According to INEC, currently six million 595 thousand 606 Ecuadorians have jobs and the economically inactive population includes four million 885 thousand 385 citizens.
Likewise, two million 620 thousand 966 people are underemployed and one million 271 thousand 333 have adequate employment.
Regarding recent statistics, the director of the INEC, Diego Andrade, pointed out at a press conference that last December, the lack of jobs affected 300 thousand people and during the health emergency that began since last March, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number rose to 700 thousand.
For his part, Andrés Isch, Minister of Labor, acknowledged that the increase in unemployment reveals a 'harsh reality.'
However, he added that the estimates are consistent with the situation in the region, severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The unemployment rate is the highest reported since 2007 and implies an increase of 9.5 percent, compared to last December.
