Election campaign for historic plebiscite starts in Chile
26 de agosto de 2020, 14:45Santiago, Chile, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Sixty days before the historic plebiscite on a new Constitution that will mark Chile's course in the next few decades, the election campaign started in an unprecedented scenario marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This situation will define the way in which the supporters and opponents of the plebiscite will make their vote-catching campaigns, laden with propaganda on social networks, written media, radio and door to door, and limiting mass rallies, which are banned due to the health measures to confront the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the plebiscite, scheduled for Sunday, October 25, voters will answer one question: Do you want a new Constitution? And they should mark the box for Approve or Reject.
If the Reject vote wins, the current Constitution, imposed during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, will continue in force.
If the Approve option wins, voters will have to answer another question on how to draw up the new Constitution: through a constituent assembly, with all its members elected by the people, or through a Joint Convention that will include equal parts of elected citizens and active lawmakers.
