Arauz urges UN and EU to be observers in Ecuador's elections
16 de septiembre de 2020, 15:10Quito, Sep 16 Prensa Latina) Presidential candidate Andres Arauz, representative of the Union for Hope, urged the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) to be observers of the ongoing electoral process in Ecuador.
Arauz, a member of the Citizen Revolution Movement, called on both organizations to urgently appoint teams to act as observers of the work carried out by the National Electoral Council (CNE), in view of the general and legislative votes, agreed for the upcoming February 7, 2021.
The request was made official in letters addressed to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the EU's Vice President for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
The petition took into account the prestige and experience of both entities in electoral issues, as well as the concerns of several sectors of Ecuadorian society in the face of legal, political, technical and budgetary problems, evidenced from the beginning of the electoral process.
In both cases, Arauz clarified that the Union for Hope will expose and present to the electoral missions the irregularities detected, which, he deemed, should be corrected immediately in order to guarantee the purity of the elections and public peace.
According to the documents, the purpose of the accompaniment is to provide the CNE with 'the necessary cooperation aimed to guarantee the success, verticality and impartiality of the elections.'
The call was also based on the invitation made by the CNE to several specialized organizations and entities to participate, as observers, in the presidential and legislative elections.
