Obrador regrets arrest of former Mexican general in U.S.
Mexico, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday regretted the case of former Secretary of Defense and retired General Salvador Cienfuegos, who was arrested in the United States for alleged links to drug trafficking.
In his daily morning press conference at the National Palace, Mexico´s President discussed the subject, from which he warned that 'everything must be proven. We cannot advance evasions or make brief trials with legal processes where the accused have the right to defense'.
According to the information, he said, the United States is going to reveal the reasons why the general was put under arrest, since they have not explained so far the reasons why he was busted, he stated.
Regardless of the outcome of the investigation and the completion of the trial, he said: 'We are dealing with an unprecedented situation, because General Cienfuegos is being arrested on the same charge as former Secretary of Public Security (Genaro Garcia Luna) of former President Felipe Calderon, even though he was the Secretary of Defense under Enrique Peña Nieto'.
Lopez Obrador added that corruption is the main cause of economic and social inequality, poverty, insecurity, violence and for a long time this plague was omitted and never seen again.
