Montenegro, ranks first in Europe in Covid-19 cases per inhabitants
Podgorica, Oct. 18 (Prensa Latina) Montenegro, a small Balkan state of 13,812 square kilometers and slightly more than 642,500 inhabitants, today ranks first in the number of Covid-19 infections in Europe for every 100,000 inhabitants.
According to data from the European Center of Statistics (Eurostat), Montenegro has 2,385 cases of the new coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Vijesti newspaper calls catastrophic the results of the National Coordination Body (NKT) in the fight against the pandemic and highlights that according to Eurostat itself, no other country in the Western Balkans appears among the top 10 in terms of the number of positive cases.
According to the most recent official data, at 5:30pm local time yesterday, 146 new cases had been registered in 24 hours, out of 358 tests performed, as well as three fatalities, bringing the total to 15,427 infected and 231 dead.
It is worth noting that since the beginning of the epidemic in March, in the so-called first wave, the country totaled 324 patients with Covid-19, while since the beginning of the second wave in June, there were more cases in a single day than in the entire previous period.
Due to the rapid and sustained increase so far in October, in five of the country's 24 municipalities, severe restrictive measures will go into effect starting tomorrow and for 14 days, such as the closure of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops and the prohibition of meetings in the homes of people who are not members of the same family.
