Environmental concession to urban project in El Salvador denounced
San Salvador, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) The eventual granting of environmental permits to a controversial urban project in El Salvador has been denounced for its serious impact on the local aquifers.
Several social organizations insist on their claim that the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) deny environmental permits to the Urban Development Project of the El Angel Valley.
The activists denounced that the MARN authorities are yielding to pressure from the business group that is promoting the project, despite the observations of the environmental impact study.
The organizations that make up the Salvemos Valle El Ángel Collective (lit. Let Us Save El Angel Valley) held a sit-in in front of the MARN headquarters, in protest against the pressure on the technical teams that assess the risks of said urban project.
According to the protesters, the sponsors of the project violate the Law of the Environment and Human Right to water in the Apopa municipality and the San Salvador metropolitan area by ignoring environmental studies.
The Valle del Angel urban project is being carried out by the Regalado Dueñas construction company, and will consist of housing units for incomes of more than 1,500 dollars a month, almost five times the minimum wage in this country.
