These states join five other non-permanent members (Germany, Belgium, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, and South Africa) and the five that hold permanent status (China, Russia, France, United Kingdom, and the United States).
Official sources in this capital indicated that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will promote from its new position the most important challenges of the moment, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the environment, climate change and its consequences and the nexus between the development, peace and security.
This year, the Caribbean country is also chairing the Caribbean Community (Caricom), made up of 15 countries plus five as partners, all from the Caribbean area.
The 10 non-permanent seats of the UN Security Council are distributed by a geographical rotation that grants two places to Latin America and the Caribbean, five to the States of Africa, Asia and Oceania, one for Eastern Europe and two for the group from 'Western Europe and other States'.

Kingstown, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Saint Vincent and the Grenadines today assumes the monthly rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council to become the smallest state in the world to hold that responsibility.
The Caribbean country of only 110,000 inhabitants was elected as a non-permanent member of that UN body in June 2019 and took office on January 1 for a two-year period together with Estonia, Nigeria, Tunisia and Vietnam.
