UN program warns on extreme poverty globally
Brussels, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Thursday warned about the evolution of extreme poverty by 2030 due to the economic impact of Covid-19.
A UN statement received in Brussels states that extreme poverty would exceed one billion people by 2030, due to the pandemic.
The text further stated that an additional 207 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty by 2030, due to the severe long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic, bringing the total number to more than one billion.
This appears with respect to a high damage scenario, in case that 80% of the Covid-19-induced economic crisis would continue over a decade.
However, the worst scenario could be avoided with the Sustainable Development Goals investments to lift an additional 146 million people out of extreme poverty, UNDP informed.
