UN Project favors Matanzas province in Cuba

Matanzas, Cuba, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) The UN Ecovalor project is currently favoring sectors such as tourism, hydrocarbons and fishing in the western Cuban province of Matanzas, Nelvis Gomez, the coordinator here of the international program, said.
The joint initiative belongs to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), explained Gomez, a specialist from the Matanzas branch of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).
The province, she set out, is conceived in an comprehensive way in the project for being identified as vulnerable in the country to the effects of climate change.
'The project provides important solutions to forecasts regarding the rise in the sea level and its negative effects on the underground aquifers that are the basis for the drinking water service,' she said.
According to the CITMA expert, the program in Matanzas has Varadero, on the north coast, among its main scenarios, and the best preserved wetland of the insular Caribbean, the Zapata Swamp, which covers the entire southern portion.
'From the innovative vision, Ecovalor contributes new environmentalist concepts for the conception of sustainable goods and services to the oil, tourism, conservation, forestry, and agricultural fields,' Gomez emphasized.
According to the CITMA especialist, 'guaranteeing the sustainability and development of each of the sectors that intervene in Ecovalor is one of the priorities of Cuba's Economic and Social Development Plan.
