Because of those searches, 360 new locality records were made and of them, 18 non-vascular and 342 vascular plants, including Lyonia santiogoana as a new species for science.
It was also identified the photosynthetic type to 724 elements and in particular that natural behavior for the first time for 15 plants, which makes it possible to recognize the most efficient in the use of water as a determining factor for survival in dry ecosystems.
A scientific novelty turned out the identification of functional types of plants according to their response to disturbances, from which was derived the basis for the proposal of a new index to calculate functional diversity.
Those scientific investigations of the natural environment favor those carried out by the Biological Corridor in the Caribbean, which also includes Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with impacts for bases to be considered for regional conservation planning in the area and its connectivity relations.
It emerged in 1992 as a result of the Summit of Rio de Janeiro, BIOECO leads researches about the sequels of climate change in Cuba and contributes to the Task Life, the State program for the protection of natural environment.

Santiago de Cuba, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) Experts from the Eastern Center of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (BIOECO) registered on Friday the inventory update of vegetal species in coastal terraces of Baconao Biosphere Reserve after a decade of research.
Sources from the institution reported that there are 1,055 of those elements, grouped into 526 genera and 112 botanical families, with the positive balance of a list of flowers in the area, which previously only existed in isolated areas.
