United Nations, 20 Jan (Prensa Latina) United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned the deaths of two members of the UN Mission in the Central African Republic (Minusca) during an attack in the prefecture of Mbomou.
As detailed today by its spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres also expressed serious concern about the increase in violence in that country and demanded an immediate end of hostilities.
During the electoral period, tensions escalated in the Central African Republic, a country that for many years has been affected by violence in all spheres and has not yet been freed from this burden, which is now dragging the Government of re-elected President Faustin-Archange Toudera.
The attack - in which the two members of the Peace Mission were killed - was perpetrated by troops of the rebel Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) and occurred about 17 kilometers from Bangassou, the district capital, which was recovered on Friday by the blue helmets, after two weeks under the occupation of that armed group.
The secretary general also called for the beginning of talks to make progress in the political process, to preserve the fragile progress and to fulfill the country's aspirations for lasting peace, the spokesman added, and said that the attacks against members of the UN mission could constitute a war crime and should be tried as such.
Guterres called on the authorities of the Central African Republic to investigate these incidents, following the deaths of seven members of the Minusca in similar attacks since last December, when the political crisis worsened.
Spokesperson Dujarric said that this is an extremely high figure and emphasized that this shows the need for those involved in political talks to make progress to ensure that there is peace and that, when agreements are signed, they must be respected.
