Moscow, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) The use of masks may decrease in Russia by the end of spring if the presence of collective immunity is confirmed and the vaccination of the population continues, scientists of this country said today.
Immunologist from the European Vaccination Center Zoya Skorpileva said that if these conditions are present, 'the number of cases should drop dramatically,' TASS news agency reported, according to information provided by Russian consulting firm RBC.
The expert recalled that at the end of last spring, the incidence of the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus in the country began to decrease and, in the summer, things were relatively calm.
'Any contagion has seasons; most likely it's going to dramatically decrease in the summer. But there is still a lot that is not clear, let's see what happens,' she said.
She reiterated that the presence of collective immunity and the success of vaccination against Covid-19 are among the factors that should be taken into account to remove the use of face masks from the system of measures to tackle the disease.
On the subject, virologist and professor at Moscow State University, Doctor of Biological Sciences Alexei Agranovsky, stressed that, at the moment, the situation is not bad and noted that Russians have the chance to prevent the outbreak of the pandemic, typical for spring.
Among the actions applied with good results, he highlighted the use of masks and social isolation. He considered that if the current situation continues, these measures could be limited or even eliminated for the summer.
For allergist and immunologist Vladimir Bolibok, the restrictions could be lifted even earlier, in April-May. He also highlighted the effectiveness of the use of masks among the measures to prevent infection with the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus.
Russia recorded 16,488 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, the lowest number reported since October 22, 2020, the operational general staff for fighting the pandemic reported today.
Therefore, the number of infections since the outbreak of the disease in the country rose to 3,967,281.
