New molecular biology laboratory starts up operations in Cuba

Guantanamo authorities noted that the institution, located in the provincial capital, will work in four shifts, and will process approximately 800 samples a day after it reaches full capacity.
Guantanamo province is currently one of the most affected in Cuba by the outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, with the disease present in 90 percent of its municipalities, and an incidence rate of 174.4 per every 100,000 inhabitants, Dr. Duran pointed out.
The molecular biology laboratory will allow speeding up the results of PCR tests (polymerase chain reaction diagnostics), which previously had to be taken to neighboring Santiago de Cuba province for their analysis.
The specialists working in Guantanamo were trained by experts from Santiago de Cuba and the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute in Havana.
