Damascus, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad denounced on Thursday that the United States and its allies in the West use the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to lobby other nations.
Those pressures seek to turn the OPCW into a tool to favor the geopolitical interests of Washington, the only nation that still possesses chemical weapons since World War II (1939-1945) to date, the foreign minister said in his virtual speech at the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament.
According to the minister, the politicization of the work of that organization represents a threat to its credibility and future. Mekdad denounced the efforts done by the United States and France to promote new draft resolutions to commit new aggressions against Syria.
On the other hand, the diplomat reiterated Syria's support to the efforts to achieve nuclear disarmament and ratified support for the draft treaty proposed by Russia and China on the prevention of the spread of weapons in outer space.
Syria repeatedly claimed that it has never used chemical weapons in its fight against terrorism and it completely destroyed its chemical arsenal in 2013, a fact the OPCW confirmed.
