Chile to unprecedented election of regional governors
Santiago de Chile, Jun 13 (Prensa Latina) People of 13 out of 16 regions of Chile went to the polls voting for regional governors, a new position that for the first time is decided by popular vote.
In the May 15 and 16 elections, candidates for such a position were only elected in the regions of Valparaíso, Aysén and Magallanes, the only ones exceeding 40% of the votes.
This election is important because the new position is part of the measures aimed at decentralizing power in the South American country, since it replaces Mayors appointed directly by the President of the Republic.
In practice, the new regional governor will be responsible for ruling each territory and ensuring its social, cultural and economic development, thus drawing up development policies each.
Analysts said that the result of this election will provide a perspective of what could happen in coming presidential elections (called for next November 22) and the correlation of political forces nationwide.
May elections were a disaster for traditional parties, as the polls gave a clear victory to independent candidates and to representatives of Broad Front Party and the Communist Party.
