First victim of the known black fungus dies in Argentina
Buenos Aires, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) A 35-year-old Argentinean with untreated diabetes on Friday died from mucormycosis, the infection known as black fungus and associated with Covid-19, local media reported.
According to the Minuto Uno website, the patient was admitted to the hospital in Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires, and had a medical record of having caught the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
In an interview with the C5N channel, the Argentine researcher Lujan Cuesta stated that those Covid-19 cases who are in intensive care units, behave like severely immunosuppressed patients and are more prone to have infections by opportunistic agents, including fungi.
He also explained that it is generally not only associated to people with the novel coronavirus but also to uncontrolled diabetic patients, with diabetic ketoasidosis or metabolic asidosis.
According to the El Litoral website, at least three people with the black fungus have already been reported in the country, so mycology specialists called to be attentive to fungal co-infection in serious Covid-19 cases who are admitted to the hospital.
