Iran’s President reiterates pacifism of nuclear program

Tehran, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) Iran's President Hassan Rouhani assured on Thursday that the country is capable of enriching uranium to 90 percent purity, but its philosophy excludes the manufacture of nuclear weapons.

In that way, Rouhani responded to concerns from the United States and other nations over the Islamic Republic’s announcement of an increase to 60 percent enrichment of fissile material.

‘The concerns raised by the Americans and the Europeans are unfounded, he noted because it is a mistake to think that we are steering the course to atomic bombs.’

If we wanted to, he added, we would take enrichment to 90 percent, but we kept our promise; we will never seek to arm ourselves with nuclear weapons.

One more time, Iranian authorities reaffirmed that the fatwa (religious decree) of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ali Khamenei, prohibits the production, stockpiling and use of such weapons of mass destruction.

Rouhani highlighted Tehran’s interest in saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or nuclear deal through diplomatic channels.
