WHO calls to prioritize women’s sexual and reproductive health

Geneva, May 7 (Prensa Latina) Giving priority to sexual and reproductive health, of both women and girls, is today´s greater commitment and support for the work of midwives, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.

Midwifery´s continuing lack of resources is a symptom that health systems are neither giving priority to women and girls´ needs nor recognizing the role of these professionals.

In addition to attending births, midwives also provide prenatal and postnatal care, as well as family planning services, STDs detection and treatment, among others.

A WHO´s recent report on this matter said that greater investment is really needed for their education and training, since doing so by 2035, approximately two-thirds of maternal, newborn and stillbirth deaths would be prevented, thereby 4.3 million lives would be saved annually.
