US in emergency due to cyber attack on pipeline

Washington, May 10 (Prensa Latina) The United States decreed a regional state of emergency after the country's largest pipeline was hit by an alleged cyber attack, industry sources said on Monday.

Hackers reportedly disconnected the facility completely on Friday and stole more than 100 GB of data from the Colonial Pipeline, which carries more than 2.5 million barrels a day, 45 percent of the East Coast planes’ fuel supply.

The action could affect the oil market and analysts consider fuel prices could increase 2-3 percent on Monday, although the impact may be greater if the cut is prolonged.

Authorities informed that the emergency decree will facilitate fuel transportation by other means, mainly by roads.

This would face the crisis that affects ‘the supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined petroleum products in affected states,’ a statement from the Department of Transportation explains.

The situation affects 17 states and the decree lifts the existing time restrictions for fuel transportation by road.
