UNSG Guterres highlights significance of mental health services

United Nations, May 11 (Prensa Latina) Mental health has been too long neglected and today we really need more investment for these services, as well as combat the stigma of getting some help, said the UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Earlier this year, a UN report stressed that mental health should also be priority in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Health crisis also affects mental health of families and communities, after decades of neglect and lack of investment for these kind of services, the report detailed.

Even since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Guterres has drawn attention to mental health´s psychological effects especially among frontline health workers.

Grief from the loss of loved ones, mental stress from isolation, movement restrictions and employment issues, difficult family dynamics, uncertainties and fear for the future are some of problems described.

According to the World Health Organization, people suffering from serious mental health conditions pass away prematurely, up to two decades earlier, due to preventable physical conditions.

Despite progress in some countries, people with mental health disorders often suffer serious human rights violations, discrimination and stigma.
