WDM calls AstraZeneca to lift Covid-19 vaccine patents

London, May 12 (Prensa Latina) Members of the Global Justice Now, formerly known as the World Development Movement (WDM), today blocked the headquarters of Anglo-Swedish Pharmaceutical Company AstraZeneca in Cambridge, England, calling it to lift Covid-19 vaccine patents.

Several members chained themselves to the AstraZeneca building gate as the company held its annual shareholders meeting, and hung from the ceiling a huge banner reading: Vaccines for the people, not vaccines for profits.

There were also protests at another AstraZeneca buildings in Macclesfield and at the University of Oxford.

According to Global Justice Now’s director, Nick Dearden, the AstraZeneca vaccine was obtained through publicly funded research, so it should be accessible to everyone.

UK is reaping benefits from a highly-effective vaccine, but thousands of people are still dying daily from Covid-19 in poor or low-income countries, members told local press.
