Cuba: Millionaire losses in communications sector due to US blockade

Havana, May 27 (Prensa Latina) In 2020, Cuba lost over US million in information technology and communications sector due to the US blockade, an official source reported.

At a press conference, the First Deputy Minister of Communications (MINCOM) Wilfredo González explained that from April to December 2020 these data have been recorded, just during the time when such a hostile US policy implemented more than 240 sanctions on our country.

González mentioned three aspects in which pretenses are directed such as limiting computer technology and equipment supplies. That´s why it is then necessary to purchase them in more distant places, he stressed. Another deprivation is aimed at export income. In this case, airmail service is one of the most hit, he exemplified.

The US Company American Airlines called off its contract with Correos de Cuba, so the Cuban company fell back on another airline to continue receiving packages from the United States.

The computing field is another one most limited, with damages that prevent access to digital platforms and websites. Over 30 websites are blocked, 18 of them from Google, the deputy minister said.

He also explained that in these times of Covid-19, in which it was necessary to go to virtual conferences, Cuba cannot access platforms like Zoom.

At the end of 2018, local authorities announced that Cubans could access Internet from their cell phones, an activity largely carried out in institutions.

Now more than seven million people, 64% of the country’s population, go to Internet in different ways, according to MINCOM´s most recent statistics.
