Renowned figures call for end to State violence in Colombia

Bogota, May 28 (Prensa Latina) Politicians, academics and journalists from around the world demanded on Friday that the Colombian Government end violence and the war-like treatment given to social protests.

In a joint statement, they condemned the repression by police forces against citizens and, especially, the use of firearms by the security forces during the protests.

On that basis, they joined the worldwide clamor that rejects the criminalization of protests in Colombia, said the group, made up of Daniel Jadue (mayor of the Recolecta Commune in Chile), Fernando Casado (Spain), Geraldina Colloti (Italy), Guillermo Teillier (president of the Communist Party of Chile), and others.

‘We support the voices that demand respect for human rights in Colombia and we demand that the corresponding legal investigations be carried out so that the crimes perpetrated against the demonstrators do not go unpunished,’ they highlighted in the document.

They also demanded that the United States Government withdraw the economic, political, diplomatic and military support for the Ivan Duque administration.

‘Due to the fact that the Colombian Police are a militarized institution attached to the Ministry of Defense, we consider that military cooperation from the White House with the Duque Government only contributes to more bloodshed,’ they emphasized in the statement.

They pointed out that the signatories love peace and social justice; therefore, they consider that the militarization of Colombia only contributes to aggravating the situation of violence that the country is already experiencing.

They also expressed their heartfelt solidarity with the families who have lost loved ones during the demonstrations.
