Russia defends Nord Stream gas pipeline against US

Moscow, May 28 (Prensa Latina) The Russian gas supplied to Europe through the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has a carbon footprint four times lower than that delivered by US companies, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Friday.

According to several analytical and consulting agencies, the reason is determined because most of the gas in the United States is produced from shale rocks through hydraulic fracturing, the official explained.

The deputy prime minister said that Russia is paying great attention to protecting the environment, TASS news agency reported. Novak responded to a statement by US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who said in a hearing at the US House of Representatives on Thursday that the natural gas produced in Russia is the ‘dirtiest one’ in the world.

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, between Russia and Germany, has been the source of great criticism, accusations and sanctions by Washington against the companies linked to the project that will benefit Europe with quality gas at good prices.
