Syrian presidential candidates congratulate Assad on re-election

Damascus, May 30 (Prensa Latina) The two candidates who ran against current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad congratulated him on his win in the May 26 election.

I congratulate Bashar al-Assad on my behalf and the internal and foreign opposition, and also on behalf of the opposition Syrian Democratic Front for winning the office of President of the Republic, candidate Mahmoud Merhi said at a press conference.

Merhi, who received 3.3 percent of the votes, said that he accepts the electoral results and hopes to work together to recover the unity of the country and free it from occupation and terrorism.

He proposed to work together to hold a national dialogue conference between the Syrian government and the national opposition.

Mehri further stressed that he will continue to work with the Syrian State for the return of refugees to their homeland and contribute to reconstruction. On the other hand, candidate Abdulah Saloum Abdulah said in a statement that the success of the election is a new victory for the people itself.

On my behalf and the Socialist Unionist Party, I express my gratitude to the people for its patriotism and participation in the election, and congratulate President al-Assad on his electoral win.

Abdulah, who received 1.5 percent of the votes, stressed that his party will continue to work to strengthen national unity until the liberation of all the Syrian territory from occupation forces.

The Syrian president received 95.1 percent of the votes in the May 26 election, in which 78 percent of citizens eligible to vote participated.
