Army attacks separatist guerrilla bases in Senegal

Dakar, May 31 (Prensa Latina) Senegal's Army bombed rebel bases in southern Casamance region, in order to dismantle positions of the armed separatist group that operates in that area, local media reported on Monday.

According to the sources, the attacked facilities of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC, in French) are near the border with Guinea Bissau and are controlled by troops commanded by Cesar Atoute Badiate, head of the armed wing of the guerrilla group.

Senegalese Army Spokesman Makhtar Diop stressed that the objective is ‘to guarantee security in the region and the surroundings to guarantee and accompany the return of people, and create conditions for their freedom of movement and to carry out economic activities.’

In 1982, the MFDC staged a great separatist rebellion, but it has practically disappeared since the 2014 truce, although it is still active and it has even held responsible for several attacks on Senegalese security forces.
