In his message for the International Day of the Seafarer, the leader highlighted how throughout the sanitary crisis, those people have faced enormous challenges related to repatriation, travel to get to their ships, access to vaccines, healthcare, and the leaves ashore.

Besides, pointed out the UN Secretary General, the members of that multinational workforce must be recognized as key workers that provide an essential service, and they must get access to transit and travels.

Seafarers must have equitable access to vaccines, because nobody is safe until everybody is, mentioned Guterres.

In 2010, the International Maritime Organization declared June 25th as Day of the Seafarer.

The term refers to the collective conformed by all those people linked to maritime activities (trade, transportation, aquaculture) on a ship and those that support them on land.
