International Asteroid Day celebrated worldwide

United Nations, Jun 30 (Prensa Latina) The International Asteroid Day is celebrated today with the aim of informing the population about the danger of objects that could collide with planet Earth and prepare to mitigate their effects.

The date, instituted by the United Nations General Assembly, seeks to take action and create a global response to this threat to safeguard public safety.

According to specialized sources, an asteroid is a rocky celestial body, smaller than a planet and orbiting between Mars and Jupiter in the region of the solar system known as the asteroid belt.

Others, known as Jupiter trojans, orbit planet Jupiter at its Lagrange points, while most of the rest cross the orbits of the planets.

The center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States has identified more than 16 thousand asteroids in the vicinity of Earth.

The International Asteroid Warning Network was created in 2014, which has detailed communication plans and protocols to assist governments in assessing the possible consequences of the impact of these objects and supporting response planning.
