Leaders in Uruguay call for final effort to plebiscite

Montevideo, Jun 30 (Prensa Latina) Former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica and other leaders of Frente Amplio (Broad Front - FA in Spanish), called on Wednesday for a final effort to get the necessary signatures to submit 135 articles of the Urgent Consideration Act (UCA) to a referendum.

Mujica defended people’s right ‘at the highest level of democracy that a society can have’ to publicly discuss a legislation that ‘will turn this country upside down again.’

With eight days to go, the Pro Referendum Commission, made up of dozens of social organizations, has to present 675,000 signatures to the Electoral Court to call for a citizen’s consultation.

Senator Danilo Astori pointed out that the UCA is a ‘bad law’ because it brings together too many of them, with 500 articles and 15 different theme areas that could not be analyzed in-depth and ‘it is to go back with respect to the achievements that FA has made in its 15 years of government.’
