Customs exemptions in force in Cuba

Havana, Jul 19 (Prensa Latina) In view of the complex economic situation that Cuba is facing as a result of limitations in the supplies of food, toiletries and medicines, customs exemptions for the temporary import of these products came into force on Monday.

The measure, published in the Extraordinary Official Gazette No.62, establishes in Resolution 309/2021 of the Ministry of Finance and Prices the exceptional and temporary nature -31/12/2021- of imports without commercial purposes, nor value limits and exempted from payment of customs duties by way of passengers as accompanied luggage for those articles.

These are provisions to alleviate the shortage of these and other products in the country, conditioned by the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, which has been further tightened in spite of the complex global health situation as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the Gazette, Resolution 213/2021 of the General Customs of the Republic clarifies that those products should be presented in separate packages from the rest of the products.

Likewise, it establishes to leave without temporary effect the regulation ‘Limit for the determination of the Commercial Character to the imports made by natural persons by any means, and the General Notes of interpretation for its application’, issued in June 2014.

However, travelers should take into account in their imports the international regulations so that those products cannot enter through the borders, including drugs or medicines with those effects.

Therefore, it is advisable to access the websites of the Customs Office and the ministries of Agriculture and Public Health.
