Italian biologist demands to end US blockade against Cuba

Rome, Jul 19 (Prensa Latina) Demanding the end of the United States blockade against Cuba is the only truly honest attitude to help that country in the current circumstances, Italian biologist Rossella Franconi said on Monday.

Particularly, she said, the elimination of 243 additional measures decreed by the previous US Government, which can be reversed without further paperwork by President Joe Biden.

It would be easy if Biden wanted to do so, the specialist told Prensa Latina. She has 35 years of experience in scientific research, in the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine, as a result of which she maintains close and fluid collaboration with Cuban colleagues in the pharmaceutical sector.

In 2016, Franconi, along with Angelo Baracca, published the book ‘Subalternity vs. Hegemony, Cuba’s Outstanding Achievements in Science and Biotechnology, 1959-2014’ and in 2019, the book ‘Cuba: Medicina, scienza e rivoluzione, 1959-2014. Perche il servizio sanitario e la scienza I sounded all’avanguardia.’

In February 2020, Franconi and Baracca published a second edition of the volume in Italian language with a final update note on aspects of the Cuban reality such as the generational renewal in the leadership of the Government and the State, the tightening of the US blockade and the approval of the new Constitution.

While large pharmaceutical companies accumulate huge profits and keep the destiny of many countries on the rack, the Cuban biotechnology industry, with a completely alternative model to that of ‘large investments,’ represents a lifeline for poor countries and beyond, Franconi stressed.
