Mexico-US border remains closed due to Covid-19

Mexico City, Jul 21 (Prensa Latina) The more than 3,000-kilometer-long border between Mexico and the United States remains closed on Wednesday, after the deadline to open it to non-essential land travelers has expired, although authorities did not announce whether those limitations will be maintained.

The statement that should be made early Wednesday was not made, according to sources from the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and the United States Embassy in Mexico, or the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Washington.

Actually, they indicated, there is no sign of opening, but a new extension of the current status. The last extension imposed by US authorities in June expired today.

The closure bans non-essential activities such as tourism, cultural events or gambling and only allows citizens or permanent residents in the United States to cross into US territory from Mexico.

After more than 16 months, US authorities and border business people asked the Joe Biden Government to lift the restrictions to deal with the economic crisis the phenomenon has caused in the area.
