Cuba with highest new Covid-19 contagion rate

Havana, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) With 7,784 new Covid-19 cases, Cuba on Friday reported the highest figure of contagions in 24 hours since the pandemic broke out in the country.

With this figure, the total number of contagions since March 11, 2020, has risen to 316,383.

Dr. Francisco Duran, national director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), informed that the situation continues to be very complex, so 7,738 of the new cases are autochthonous.

‘The entire national territory reported cases, except Isla de la Juventud special municipality, where an imported patient was reported on Thursday, but none by national contagion for more than a month,’ Dr. Duran said.

In his regular press briefing on television, the expert added that 60,994 active patients are in hospitals nationwide, including 20,118 suspected cases, 3,441 under epidemiological surveillance and 37,435 active patients with the coronavirus.

To date, 37,107 patients are clinically stable, 129 are in a critical condition and 199 are seriously ill.

He also pointed out that 66 people died on Thursday due to complications related to the disease, so the death toll increased to 2,203 in almost 18 months of pandemic in the island.

Cuba’s chief epidemiologist warned about the high figures in pediatric patients, in which 1,287 minors were reported with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours and 16,411 were diagnosed in the last 15 days, totaling 47,905 contagions since March 2020.

The specialist said that 5,932 patients were discharged from hospitals on Thursday, so the number of recuperated patients rose to 276,689.

On Tuesday, all molecular biology laboratories in Cuba made 51,425 PCR tests in real time to detect the presence of the virus, totaling 6,099,427 samples so far.

Referring to the immunization progress, Dr. Duran informed that 8,546,995 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine candidates, Soberana 02 and Abdala (CIGB-66), have been administered until July 21.
